Hi everyone,
We have one SA2000 appliance with a large configuration and we want to export this configuration and import it on our new SA4500. Currently i cannot do this because the SA2000 runs on firmware 5.5R1 and the SA4500 runs on 6.3R2.
What are my options to get this done?
I tried to downgrade the SA4500 to version 5.5R1 but that doesn't work! He only seems to run on a minimal version of 6. I cannot bring the SA2000 offline or upgrade to version 6.3R2 because that will interrupt all customers.
Hmm - this sounds like a tough one. Not sure what would work. Obviously you can't simply export and import the config or user data, the new box will not take it. One thought that does come to mind. Have you tried doing some individual "section" exports using XML and then importing them? I have not done it, but it is the one area where you have some control over the data.
Just a thought.
Maybe you can ask Juniper for renting a sa2000 for some days, downgrade this to your SA's current release copy the config over there, upgrade this SA2000, export, import to the next. Then you would have at least the possiblity to do this wihout an outage.
I believe 6.1.x is the minimum version for a SA-x500 version.
Yes, you can XML export sections of your config. I would do one section at a time. Do the export in both the old one and new one.
compare the files and add missing data. Very manual, but the newer versions have different XML tags and such. I would use a tool like WinMerge to help with diff's.
As another thought, it is VERY hard to downgrade versions unless you have backed up both the system and user configs. ALWAYS do this first so you have something to roll back on.

We tried to copy a config from SA4000 (testdrive hardware) to SA2500 by first upgrading the SA4000 to the version running on the SA2500, then saving the configuration and importing it to the SA2500.
It didn't work so I opened a case with JTAC: They told me that the configuration format of SAx000 deivces is not compatible with that of SAx500. The XML-im/export didn't work either because important parts are not included.
I ended up in pointing one browser to the SA4000 and another to SA2500 and "copy"by hand. :-(
You have to use IE for one box and FireFox for the other. Useing the same browser on one PC with both SAs won't work.

You can just use Firefox with two different profiles.
Hi all,
I just did a test of user configuration import on our test device (SA2500, running 6.3r7). The binary config file was created on another test device (SA2000 running 6.3r2). The file imported successfully, even when not all the virtual interfaces were present on the new test box.
I don't know if it will work between releases 5.5 and 6.x, I will test some more combinations later and let you know.
Best regards,
Peter
