How to properly assess client OS without Hostchecker

Hi,

are there any ways other than using Hostchecker or the client's browser user agent string to find out what OS he is on? Those user agent strings can be faked and Hostchecker does not run on iOS or Android.. how can we make sure what OS the user is on?

At this moment, the only way I can think of identifying mobile OS using client browser user agent string.
