Hello everybody,
We have a challenge with our SA4500. Whe have published serveral Terminal Servers to our clients. Everybody can connect to the different Terminal Servers. They all get a full desktop. When someone browses to a Java website with flashing content, the performance of the Terminal Server decreases drastically. Does anybody recognizes this problem ?
We use a Juniper 4500 with software 6.4R1. The terminal servers are both Server 2003 and Server 2008.

Terminal service performance can suffer when you combine large amounts of screen change, high resolution, and network latency. You could try reducing the Color Depth in the Terminal Services Settings of your role.

Russ
Russ,
Thank you for your quick reply. The Color Depth is set to 16 bit. I don't think our users will be very happy with a color depth of 8 bit. But i will give it a try. If that works well, they can choose between two bad options
I will let you know if this helps.
In the meantime, if somebody else has an idea, don't hesitate to post.

Unfortunately, by setting the color depth to 8 Bit, we didn't solve the problem.
Any other suggestions are welcome.
The only other thing I can think of that might help is to make sure that all of the Display Settings for the Session are unchecked.
Russ,
Thanks again for the quick response. I assume that with the Display settings, you mean the Desktop settings. They are all unchecked. I raised a case with Juniper Support. Hopefully they can shine a light on the problem. I will update this thread when i have had contact with Juniper Support.

Unfortunately this is a known issue. It has to do with the buffering done on the SA device and if you fill this buffer the session can become lock-ed up or extremely slow. I opened a ticket with Juniper support (went all the way to the product manager) almost 3 years ago and there was no resolution over than to use network connect and a local RDP client.
There was some improvements in term of responsiveness over slow links for WTS using rich content (like flash) that eventually lead the entire session to freeze in IVE OS 6.4R3 and above and in 6.5Rx
52.
win-term-svcs-other - Fixed a WTS freeze issue while accessing flash content on a slow link. (390188)
So upgrading to 6.4R3 or above might get you some improvements.
However it is not possible to fully fix the slowness of such sites when accessed through RDP, this is due to underlying RDP limitations that should see some improvements with RDP7, check these links:
