Logins fail when leaving VPN running and closing laptop

I have a Windows 10 laptop tied to an AD domain. I've been using Pulse Secure (free version) as my VPN solution for a few years with just AD authentication. Recently I enabled two factor authentication in Pulse Secure to leverage one time passwords via linotp.

Right after doing that I've started experiencing issues. When using the VPN I close my laptop. When opening it again I start getting login failed errors in my laptop login. I'm unable to login to the laptop until I get it back onto my domain network.

I'm looking for ideas as to what can cause this. Any ideas where to look? The only thing to change is the VPN settings.

login to the desktop is failing? that is not something we have seen or heard

Correct... Logins to desktop are failing.

If you want I can walk you through it over a video chat.

I can't even say for certain its Pulse Secure causing problems. Tonight, I'm going to kill 2 factor auth and see if the issue goes away. Once I do that I'll know for certain.
