I've got a customer that recently got a problem where files are removed in the directory c:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Juniper Networks\Host Checker\. When they try to connect via VPN the users get a message saying for example "pluginClient.dll" is missing.
This started happening when we upgraded from 6.4 -> 6.5 but it's somewhat random, doesn't happen all the time and not for all users. The files are not found in the quarantine of the AV which is the first thing to check. Since it's under the users directory we turned off roaming on that directory to see if that was what caused it but it doesn't seem to have solved it.
Since it's so random it's hard to find a way to observe and diagnose the problem. Has anyone encountered a similar problem or have any tips on how to diagnose it?
this sounds like problematic updates for the NC client components. Probably best to deinstall the NC client, reconnect to the SA and have the client installed a second time.
We've tried that already, sadly. After reinstall it works ok for the users and then suddenly the problem reappears again, files go missing that is.
Hmmm... do these files disappear after connecting with the SA?
They probably disappear at unknown moments and that only gets noticed when connecting, so this is probably quite a stupid question...
Are you comfortable fiddling with Windows NTFS ACLs? You could try auditing the folder and content, easily distributed with GPO. Although the overhead will probably be rather hefty....
That's the idea the support group came up with as well. Seems like that's what we are going to have to do, overhead or not.
Was hoping this was something that was hot-fixable. =)
Maybe it is... I just don't know..
What is the common factor here? (Aside from all those users running Windows, of course)
- Are they all on e.g WinVista x64?
- are they all running antivirus brandX?
- are they all admins on their system?
- are they all in 1 specific AD group?
- do they have a common role?
There's one thing I'd like to know: do any other apps that include DLL files install fine? More specifically, do other network-integrated apps install and run without any problems?
I know there are tools and hardware PCI cards that revert any installation to its original state after e.g. reboot. Do you use any of these?
I've upgraded from 6.3r3 to 6.5r7, and several of our clients are experiencing the same problem with 'pluginclient.dll missing'. Uninstalling host checker then reinstalling it works for a while, but often the problem comes back. Its only a small number of users that this is affecting.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Does anyone have an update on this issue, how they resolved it?
We have started to see a number of user experiencing this problem and wondered if there was a solution for it, other than uninstalling NC.
Any help is appreciated.
