Second DNS Domain.

Hi, We are having a problem with DNS and Sharepoint and was hoping someone could let me know if it's possible.... Our SA is setup with a different domain (mycompany.com) than our internal DNS domain (insidemycompany.com). Is there a way for the SA to use a different domain name when quering internal DNS for short names?

When I put in http://myserver/default.aspx as a web bookmark, it tries to resolve it as "myserver.mycompany.com" and I would like it to do a lookup for "myserver.insidemycompany.com". I'd like to tell it to try multiple DNS domains when trying to resolve like most PC OSs can....

The real issue is Sharepoint that have some sort of URL redirection setup that only recognizes the shortname, not the FQDN, so we can't put the FQDN into the web bookmark.

Thanks.

Re: Second DNS Domain.

No, there is not. You would need to have both DNS servers listed and domains.
As an aside, using shortname only is very hard to do on the SA; and your results may/will be sporadic (even before adding in the complexity of what your Sharepoint team did).

What dns servers & domains do you have listed at system>network>overview?

Re: Second DNS Domain.

Both domains are listed and the DNS servers listed will process requests for both domains as well. We've never had a problem using either DNS domain in a FQDN..

I'm guessing this has more do to with the SA not doing a proper DNS request for shortnames....

It does work if I enter in a host table entry for the shortname, but not the best solution...

Thanks.

Re: Second DNS Domain.

The hosts file entry is the most efficient way to work with shortnames. This is the only way that near-guarantees that the request will leave the SA intact shortened and not expanded.
If you put your internal dns domain first, does it work?

Re: Second DNS Domain.

HI Stephen,

Have you tried checking the option IP based matching for Hostname based policy resources under web policy options?

Try putting the internal domain first under DNS domain and see if it works

Re: Second DNS Domain.

The Internal domain is listed at the first domain in the box.

I currently don't have the "Auto Allow" checked, but pretty sure I did when I was testing... When I get some time, I'll make up a test role to play with.. The existing one is working with the hostname, so I'm guessing a few people may get upset if I started playing around with it.. Smiley Happy

Re: Second DNS Domain.

Auto allow shouldn't be a problem...just need to make sure the host & path are listed in the ACL as allowed

Re: Second DNS Domain.

I have the shortname and the IP address in the policy, so that should have covered it. I'll just stick with the host entry until I can convince the sharepoint guys to change it on their end..

Thanks for the help and suggestions..

Re: Second DNS Domain.

You are welcome; thank you for the update. I am sorry it is not a perfect solution, by far, but at least you have something that allows successful access at this time.
