Sharepoint 2010 ribbon "loading"

HI, I have built an extranet system with my IVE and SharePoint 2010. The SharePoint farm is on a separate extranet domain that trusts our internal corporate domain. It will trust users from internal and customers (have accounts in extranet domain). Customers seem to be fine. Employees, not so much. When you click the web bookmark for the SP site, it passes the authentication ok, until you click a ribbon tab in SP. Then it hangs on "loading" with an error on page.

If you try to click other things in SP, it bumps the employee user to a yellow IVE screen asking for authentication again. If the user re-auth's everything seems ok.

Has anybody else had problems like this with SP 2010?

We have decided to scrap the VPN for this task and have a developer build an authentication provider within SharePoint.

Based on above and the other point about trusted domain relationship it seems like there may be an issue with the way SA is presenting user credentials to backend. Can you open a JTAC case including a dsrecord record (session recording) & policy trace from a failed session and if possible any SSO config screenshots?
