Yes, the system does auto-update AV signatures.
I've researched this against our internal case notes and it's basically due to a hiccup in the update process on our backend servers. We're working on reducing the frequency of these occurring and have made some code changes to avoid most common cause.
If the error is sporadic, it can be safely ignored. If it continues for more than a day or so you should open a case with JTAC.
