Virtual SA upgrade from 7.4R9:2 to 8.0 series

Looking upgrade path from 7.4R9:2 to latest 8.0 version. There is not much information about supported upgrade path and only information I found was 8.0.R1.0 release notes:

7.1R16 to 8.0R1 You can upgrade directly to 8.0R1 simply by installing the 8.0R1 upgrade. We have tested this upgrade path.

Also what I'm missing is upgrade packages for virtual edition. Virtual edition has only download links to full installation package.

Anyone else done similar upgrade?

Re: Virtual SA upgrade from 7.4R9:2 to 8.0 series

When the release Notes say 7.1R16 to 8.0R1 in the release column this means this is the path for any release from 7.1R16 upto 8.0R1 and this will apply for any later 8.0 release unless changed in a later version of the release notes.

I believe you should be able to upgrade a virtual appliance using the same package as the hardware appliance.

Re: Virtual SA upgrade from 7.4R9:2 to 8.0 series

Thanks for information. I had understood upgrade path correctly but wanted to be sure. Reason for asking is that I'm having issues with upgrade.

Upgrade from current 7.4R9:2 to 7.4R13.3 works fine. Just like all other upgrades I have done to same environment in past.

But upgrade attempt to either 8.0R1.0 or to 8.0R10.0 fails with following error:

"The service package you uploaded is not valid. Click here to continue"

In Admin Access log following entries are logged in attempt of upgrade:

System software upgrade failed. The service package uploaded is not valid.

Files that I'm using in upgrade are:

j-sa-8.0r1.0-b27973-package.pkg (for 8.0R1.0)

j-sa-8.0r10.0-b35099-package.pkg (for 8.0R10.0)

I have downloaded upgrade packages by selecting SA2500 as device and then downloaded packages from download listing.

To me it seems something extra is needed or some setting needs to be changed. But no idea what.

Re: Virtual SA upgrade from 7.4R9:2 to 8.0 series

Found out reason why upgrade fails. This virtual SA was created from one of the first versions available and in ovf configuration disk size was configured as 10 GB. After comparing to other virtual SA installations I noticed that disk size has then changed to 20 GB in ovf configuration.

Upgrade in virtual SA with 20 GB disk works just fine.

I looked at partition table of that 10 GB virtual disk and it looks too complicated to extend. So I'll create new virtual SA with same version as existing one and move configuration to that.
