What licence when converting single to cluster

It's recommend that both units in a cluster pair have the same user licences. What if someone wanted to start with 1000 user licence on a box with the upper limit of 1000 users in a single configuration and then add another box to make a cluster for redundancy? Would you need to buy another 1000 licence for the second box in order to hit the recommended balance even if the upper limit in the cluster is still 1000 users? Anyone can tell me how to go about this??

Re: What licence when converting single to cluster

You do not need to buy a second 1000 user license. Your assumptions are correct.

If you want to get a really good understanding of how the Juniper SSL licensing scheme works now - go over www.kevpeterson.com -he is the Juniper SSL Product Manager. Hit the category called licensing and you can read all about the new (now not so new) licensing and the impact on user licenses when box failures occur if you have an "unbalanced" scheme like 1000 - 500.

Re: What licence when converting single to cluster

Hello KatJ,

On a "Active/Passive" cluster for redundancy, we are suppose to do the below:

Node 1

Node 2

Node 1 - Running 1000 user license as per your scenario.

If you want to join Node 2 to the cluster, then you need to have "Clustering license" on Node 2.

We currently have a new licensing scheme and I would strongly recommend you to contact your sales for detail.

Please feel free to come back if you have more queries on the same.

Re: What licence when converting single to cluster

Thanks ajacob

Sorry I was too vague. I actually wanted to illustrate what my scenario would result in based on the new licence scheme, not considering cluster licence at all. The upper limit of 1000 users I talked about ealier is for MAG4610.

Let me clarify my senario.

I want to start MAG4610 with this 1000U upper limit in a single and, after a year or two, add another MAG4610 to make a cluster. Do I have to buy a 1000U licence for the second unit, the same licence as in the first box as said in the guidelines. The user count would add up to 2000U but limited to 1000U on MAG4610 right? so feel like kinda wasting money.

Or can I buy 500U licence to make a cluster to support a total of 1000U? Here, I break the rule of having the same licence in both unis in cluster, yet this is okay because the hardware limit of 1000U will prevent the support user problem in the failure of one unit from occuring that the uneven licences would otherwise cause? 500U licence can bring 500U from the failed unit to the table making 1000U.
