Client v9.1R2 disconnects after 5-10min on Ubuntu 20.04

I have a client version 9.1R2(69) running on Ubuntu 20.04 that keeps disconnecting my vpn connection after 5-10min. It works fine up until then.

I'm wondering if this is a problem with some tcp keepalive or is it the NetworkManager causing this to be disconnected since the tunnel created (tun0) is not managed and needs to configured as to be ignored by the NetworkManager.

Anybody that have some experince or knowledge on how to resolve this ?

Regards

Einar

Re: Client v9.1R2 disconnects after 5-10min on Ubuntu 20.04

I have tried with mobile hotspot and the same thing happens, i.e. disconnects after 5-10mins.

I've noticed the lease time is an hour (3599 seconds) that should be renewed automatically. Don't know if that could be some factor in this because in the meantime this happens:

feb 02 18:23:31 <my-laptop> whoopsie[4051]: [18:23:31] Cannot reach: https://daisy.ubuntu.com
feb 02 18:23:31 <my-laptop> whoopsie[4051]: [18:23:31] offline
feb 02 18:23:31 <my-laptop> whoopsie[4051]: [18:23:31] online
feb 02 18:23:40 <my-laptop> NetworkManager[1272]: <info> [1612290220.8028] device (wlp0s20f3): disconnecting for new activation request.
feb 02 18:23:40 <my-laptop> NetworkManager[1272]: <info>  [1612290220.8029] device (wlp0s20f3): state change: activated -> deactivating (reason 'new-activation', sys-iface-state: 'managed')
feb 02 18:23:40 <my-laptop> NetworkManager[1272]: <info> [1612290220.8065] audit: op="connection-activate" uuid="57bee990-b225-4e9b-9c0c-bab8f4ad117e" name="<my-new-ssid>" pid=8260 uid=1000 result="success"

Can it be that the whoopsie daemon is kicking the NetworkManager to deactivate the interface when it can't reach daisy.ubuntu.com ?

Re: Client v9.1R2 disconnects after 5-10min on Ubuntu 20.04

einar.bjorgvinsson@marel.com Sounds like a control channel disconnect caused by some ISP or Firewalls if the TCP channel doesn't send any data for more than 5 to 10 mins, which is true in the case when VPN connection is using ESP data channel i.e. TCP control channel will be only having keepalives sent back-forth b/w client and VPN server.

Do you see ESP payload sent out from your physical interface? If possible, please switch the VPN data channel to SSL (config change on the server side) and check the behavior.

Hi and thank you for your response.

How would I go around to see if ESP is being used by my client ? Wireshark or some logs ?

yes, you would check wireshark for ESP traffic to the IP of the appliance

Re: Client v9.1R2 disconnects after 5-10min on Ubuntu 20.04

I have it confirmed from IT that they had SSL transport configured server site.

Would it make sense to test out ESP ? is the error I'm facing typical for SSL transport ?

We did test with ESP transport configured and we ran into the same problem of my client disconnecting after 5-10mins.

Anything else I can check here ?

einar.bjorgvinsson@marel.com Are you facing disconnections even with SSL mode enabled? Do you face the same issue when connected through a different network like mobile hotspot?

Re: Client v9.1R2 disconnects after 5-10min on Ubuntu 20.04

I'm currently running this from my laptop which is wifi connected and apparently I'm experiencing this both with SSL and ESP. At least the IT department changed the settings server site between SSL and ESP without it having fixed the problem for my client connection. Was there something I needed to do on the client site when these settings are changed on the server site ?

Since you mention connection to a different network I could try with a wired connection.

einar.bjorgvinsson@marel.com yes, please connect using a different network like mobile hotspot which should be completely different from your current WiFi or LAN connection and check if the disconnection happens?

If still occurs, then we would need to capture on both client and server side to identify who's triggering the disconnect.
