Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

Hi @ all,

here´s the situation:

we´ve an old Zeus Loadbalancer Appliance which run´s Version 6.0r7 - very old and no longer in Production use.

Now I´ve been updated this Appliance to V7.0 for internal tests, but now all the Historical Activity will not be displayed.

I started the Appliance again with V 6.0r7 but the Historical Data aren´t still there.

Is there any chance to get the Data back??

An actually what is more important:

Will these be also when I updating our TM-Appliance which is in Production ?

Thanks for answer.

Regards,

Michael

Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

Hi again ...

I upgraded just to Version 7.1 ... rollback to 6.0r7 first ... and all the historical data are back ...

so I think, there´s something wrong with Version 7.0 ...

however, everything is fine.

If you can test the upgrade to 9.6 or 9.7 in your lab and report back that would be nice anyway.

Regards,

Michael

Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

Michael,

I have reached out internally to some people in the know to get some information to help you. (Sorry, STM v6-7 is a little before my time with Riverbed!)  I will let you know what I turn up..

As an aside, can I ask why you are only upgrading to a version of STM that is more than two years old? STM8.1r1 was released over 2 years ago and the current release is 9.6r1...

Cheers...

Aidan

Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

Michael,

I have had a chat to some folks internally.  Take a look at your STM that you upgraded in the $ZEUSHOME/zxtm/log/statd/<hostname> directory (where <hostname> is the hostname of the STM) and see if there are files there. There was many changes made in version 7.0, most notably the introduction of Multi Site Manager which has implications on the statd data you are referring to.

As version 7.0 is past it's end of support date, we are not able to provide TAC support to you on this very old version of code. You really should install a version of code that is still actively supported. Is there a a reason you are not able to install 9.6r1?

cheers...

Aidan.

Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

Hi Aidan,

thanks for answer.

There´re files in $ZEUSHOME/zxtm/log/statd directory;

one directory with name <hostname> and a few other files with  <date>.log as name ( e.g. 20140729.log )

In the directory <hostname> there´re all the logfiles that are missing - what should I do with the files so that I can watch the data in the historical activity ?

Because of the fact, that we need this appliance only for testing there´s no necessity to get Riverbed Support for it.

Actually I´m not sure which is the last version I "can" install at the Hardware-Appliance ZXTM-2000 ...

Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

OK.  I am going to go out on a limb here.  Your ZXTM2000 series are well beyond end of support, so I think there are probably better platforms out there to test on.

As for taking the data moving forward, I am advised by "developers in the know" that MUCH changed in between V6 and V7 (most notably Mutli Site Manager) that changes the way that these files are parsed.  As much as I would like to dig further to help you, it isn't possible for us to get developer resources allocated to looking into issues like this on versions of code that are past the "End of Support" dates. As you can understand, we would rather our developers are working on current code versions and making awesome new features!

My guess is that you might be out of luck in assuring access to the data between these two revisions.

I am keen however to understand what versions you are using in production and how we can help to get you onto a supported platform..

Are your production STM's ZXTM2000s also? If you are just using these in the lab but you have newer supported Virtual Appliances or software installs in production, you are MUCH better off using the developer edition in your test lab. The Developer Edition is available here: SteelApp Developer Edition.

Cheers.

Aidan.

Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

Hi Aidan,

It´s quite plain to me that I can´t get developers assistance for this little problem ... but perhaps there´ve been the possibility that somebody could know the solution for this.

If you still get an solution please let me know ...

We don´t have ZXTM2000 in production use, we use virtual Appliances version 9.x, which have Support of course.

Thanks anyway for your help.

Actually what I wanted still to know:

Will the Historical Data missing too when I updating our TM-Appliance v 9.x which is in Production use ?

Or have I to open a support Case for this question?

Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

Historical data should be maintained across upgrades AFAIK.  If you are concerned, you can test on a SteelApp Developer Edition...

I will try it out in my lab a little later today to see, but from memory, my historical data has survived minor point upgrades in the past.

Re: Re: Question about Historical Activity Data when updating an Appliance

I have just tested the 9.6r1 to 9.7 upgrade, and historical data was retained.
