What is the password recovery process for a Stingray Traffic Manager?

Easy enough for Steelheads but not so for this, it keeps asking me for the root password when booting?

If this is a software install, and If you are able to log on with access to administer the operating system, you can reset the Traffic Manager admin password with the "z-reset-password" command.

If this is a Virtual appliance, the procedure is documented in the Virtual Appliance Getting Started Guide p.53 on the Riverbed Support Site

Resetting the Admin Password

If you forget the admin password, you can reset it using the following procedure:

1. Access the virtual appliance host management interface (e.g. vSphere Client or XenCenter)
2. Reboot the virtual appliance, "forcefully" if required
3. Access the virtual appliance console
4. Press ESCAPE when you see the following prompt:
   

   GRUB loading, please wait
   Press ESC to enter menu...

5. Select Recovery mode from the boot menu and hit RETURN.
6. At the prompt, type z_reset_password and hit RETURN.
7. Follow the instructions to change the password (you will be asked to enter a new admin password twice).
8. Type reboot and hit RETURN. The virtual  appliance will reboot and you will be able to log in to the Admin UI using the new admin password.

Note: If your virtual appliance is a member of a cluster, you should then visit the Diagnose section of the Admin UI, which will report a configuration conflict. Use the Diagnose page to push the new admin password to the other Stingrays in the cluster.
