Why do the Virtual Appliance zip files need several petabytes to extract?

When attempting to extract any of the Virtual Appliance zip files, Windows may present an error similar to:

There is not enough space on Local Disk. You need an additional 734 PB to copy these files.

This is a known problem with the built-in zip functionality in Windows mis-computing the space required. This may also occur in WinZip. To work around this, use a different tool to extract the files, such as 7-Zip or the unzip command in most Linux distributions.
